I really don't think that it's just aimed at Joe Average Fan. I think this will turn out to be another outlet for internet personalties such as bloggers, podcasters and the like. Maybe even some other non-internet people as well such as actors and comedians.

I mean, I surely don't speak for everyone, but I would pay a buck or two to hear some of my favourite podcasters do things like this. VOR being one of them.

Aw, thanks. We'll have to look into it. One of our "fans" took our old Ep IV commentary and laid it on top of the film. I hadn't heard it since we posted it, and it was actually pretty cool. It might work...

I understand the sentiment... but as long as so many other podcasts do them for free... IHN, STAN... I dunno.

No offense to any of those guys, but one I have never listened to and one I listen to if I have nothing else to listen to. I'm not going to say which or why, because one I have no experience with and the other I think the hosts are very nice. So nothing against them. I don't want to put anyone down, just not my bag.

All I can say is that I would pay a couple bucks to hear a funny scripted commentary track from VoR for a movie that I already own. I also think that anyone that could do this, and do it well, would open themselves up to a larger audience and more attention.

I ain't gonna lie, I'd pay a buck for a commentary track from the VOR boys. I don't listen to STAN, theChurchcast, etc. and quite frankly I have no interest if they did have a free commentary track. Also if they do one I would rather they throw away the script and "act on instinct". Besides the cool VOR commentary track is no bigger than two meters, so it's not impossible.

Thanks, Deke. With just text to go on I could almost SEE the movie commentary.

... IHN has done a bunch of them - they're a good way to kill 2 hours at work (I draft engineering plans all day w/ headphones, so I'm a podcast glutton).

I hope VOR does more - but charge for them? I'm not saying I woundn't pay - but really? I'm all about free content; one can download our entire band's CD for free.

Free.
Free is good.

I have listened to both VotR's and IHN's. Both are equally hilarious in their own ways. I don't know, I am just against the idea of charging for one of these things. I mean, how much would you make? 10 bucks, maybe 20 bucks tops? Is it worth trying to charge people to hear something that (IMO) should be free?

Well, also you would be hosting them on another website. To me, it's personally less about the money and more about the exposure of a brand. You would have the power of someone that is famous for something hosting your version of that something on his website.

Hearing that, I'm even more thumbs-down about charging.
That would be the VOR sell-out point, leeching off of the Star Wars name (like another SW podcast which I'm only allowed to talk about in a certain thread).[/i]

Strangely enough, I was actually talking about doing movies of a non-Star Wars nature. I don't see how putting your product out and making it more accessible is "selling out." Now if VoR got sponsored by LucasFilms and recanted on all the negative things they have spoke of in the past, they I would call that selling out.

Bingo, and we'd never go back on our word for free. :D

Of course yo ulike free, who doesn't? But what's wrong with trying to make a buck for the good of the show? We give the show away for free every week, and that's fine. But we need money to keep it going and to do additional cool stuff besides blather into a computer.

For instance, we're selling tee shirts that many of you asked for, but very few have purchased. We'll offer more if you don't like the design, but shit, man!

RebelScum has ads to keep their lights on, and that's how they can afford to make a professional podcast and send dudes to conventions ( I assume). Server space costs, everything costs. And I know you call into that show, too.

Then there's the matter of supporting a show and paying people what they're worth. We want a better show, and to do awesome stuff for you, our listeners, our fans. But out of pocket takes its toll.

Well... the Community chest supports the vorum, not the show.
What's wrong with having a pledge-drive episode? Or a time period where you politely remind the listeners that you guys put in 100s of hours of your lives into this?

Lots of podcasts do it. Figure a target amount and get creative about it. I would think you'd be able to raise money quicker than selling commentary episodes, and it would take the pressure off of you guys to make the future commentaries 'worth paying for'. On the other hand, using the commentaries as a bounus-gift incentive (emailing links to donators) might work too. I dunno. I recently sent IHN some Cdn figs and candy intead of cash...
