Stever,

I am listening to your show and it is quite entertaining. It exposes me to new styles of stuff I usually do not seek out or cannot find here. I trust your opinions on the VORUM, so I thought I would check it out. FUN FUN FUN.

Tom Waits - very huge, very influential in my musical life. I first caught a live show of his when I was 10 on PBS. I believe the show was Soundstage and it had a mix of live and taped clips/tunes. I also use him in my music classes. Perhaps we could talk.

Also, do listen to any jazz or ethinc influenced music? I may just force you to buy something to review.

God, I love Tom Waits. A college professor turned me onto him. If I didn't already have enough reason to check out this show.

That's awesome. I am introducing him to 7th graders. Rod Stewart says Tom Waits is one of the most important song writers of this century regarding his influence on rock/pop musicians.

Most of the stuff I use in class is pretty tame. I leave out the murder and destruction of the earth kind of stuff.

I also use the Austin City Limits performance from 1978. He starts off singing a ballad smoking his trademark cigs in between two gasoline pumps. Brilliant use of tension.

I think all 7th Graders should learn about using another person's skull as bowl.

You can't really tell because it's typed out, but the second one was faster and more intense.

:D

Look up Mr. Waits. Bone Machine's unrelated to the Pixies, but a really important album for him. Excellent work.

I know it's a compilation, but one of my favourite Waits albums is Beautiful Maladies. It's a great way to introduce people to him and has songs from both Rain Dogs and Bone Machine. I mean, it's also cool that the track listing is selected by Tom himself for what he thinks represents his work from that time period.

I mean, seriously, he's just one of those cool guys. He influences pretty much anyone worth listening too and still more or less avoids the mainstream and all it's pitfalls.

I know that it is a Tom Waits album, but it is also a Pixes song. And a pretty kick ass Pixies' song. "He bought me a soda, he bought me a soda and he tried to molest me in the parking lot"
